Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Explained.

15 June 2020

There are many perks that come with vehicles these days, but none more coveted than Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Lucky for us, we have three world-class vehicle ranges that offer this feature standard in many of their models. But what exactly is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto? We’ll dive in to these great features below so you can learn more.

What is it?

Your phone’s face is projected onto the digital touchscreen of our vehicles, usually through a USB connection, allowing you to access select apps on your phone. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make it possible to safely access your phone’s features while staying alert and attentive to the road.

Since its release in 2014, Apple CarPlay has gone through a series of changes and updates, making it more intuitive and easy to use than ever.

How does it work?

To use Apple CarPlay, plug in your iPhone to your vehicle’s USB cable and after a prompt on your phone to connect, your phone will be mirrored onto the vehicle’s touchscreen. This is the same with Android 10 operating system or higher.

If you’re operating on an Android 9 or below, download the Android Auto app and connect your USB cable to your vehicle. Navigation, calls, messages, music, and audio all feature on Android Auto.

Depending on the system you use, a simple “Hey Siri!” or “Hey Google!” is all you need to activate the system. Then simply tell your vehicle what you need – ie, “Hey Siri, please play Sylvan Esso.” – and enjoy.

Only apps that have been approved as safe to operate while driving will work, though the list is long. Phone, music, maps, messages, podcasts, and audio are all available on Apple CarPlay and similar on Android Auto.

What can Apple CarPlay and Android Auto do?

You can seamlessly flip through albums, songs, podcasts, and more with the flick of a wrist or voice activation. Many popular music streaming and storage apps are compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you’re not restricted to just what’s on your phone. Music to our ears.

Make phone calls, listen to voicemail and text messages aloud, and answer texts all while keeping two hands on the wheel. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can read aloud messages and allow you to speak out your reply.

Your favourite navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze are right at your fingertips. Or activate with a simple “Hey Siri” or “Hey Google” and tell your system where you’d like to go. CarPlay goes a step further with its smart features, predicting your desired location based on addresses in your email, text messages, contacts, and calendars.

You may miss out on road construction updates, crucial turns, and more with your built-in satellite navigation system, as it doesn’t update as often. With phone-based apps, you’ll get traffic updates, points of interest, and more.

These apps can easily recognise points of interest, like petrol stations and cafes, crucial in times of need. These smart apps also automatically connect to your email, calendar, and more, so finding addresses for appointments is a breeze.

Your vehicle’s built-in satellite navigation system is clever, but comes with its limitations, making Apple CarPlay and Android Auto a welcome perk.

View your day at a glance through the calendar app on your phone. Your clever system will remind you of meetings, and even allow you to tap the event to get direction to the location. If the meeting is on phone, just tap to dial in.
