Government Clean Car Programme

On 13th June 2021 the New Zealand Government announced their Clean Car Package, delivering on their promise to cut transport emissions. Read on to find out more and how this will affect you.

In June 2021, the New Zealand government announced a rebate on new cars purchased from 1st July 2021 to 31st December 2021 as part of a goal to be carbon neutral by 2050 and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Applications for the rebate will be accepted until 28 February 2022 and are subject to funding. The rebate can be claimed once the vehicle has been registered.

“Approximately half of New Zealand’s CO2 emissions come from transport, of which two-thirds come from light vehicles – cars, SUVs, vans, utes and trucks under 3.5 tonnes. The Clean Car Discount makes it easier to choose to buy an electric or low-emission light vehicle that’s better for the environment by reducing the cost of fuel-efficient vehicles imported into New Zealand.” – NZTA
